“Were it not for” の意味

英文の文頭に “Were it not for…,” と出てくることがあります。

これは

「もし…がなければ、」

という意味で

“If it were not for…,”

の倒置法、また “if” を省略したかたちとして考えることができます。

例として

“Were it not for food, we could not live.”

(If it were not for food, we could not live.)

「もし食べ物がなかったら、私達は生きることができないだろう。」

このように使われます。

“for” の後を「主語」として考えるとわかりやすいと思います。
